MG Mezcal Gin

From Sparrow’s agave and mezcal list, MG Mezcal Gin is one of the most unusual bottles we pour, a very unique fusion of a mezcal base with gin botanicals added in ($20 by the pour, or $30 for a larger pour).

About MG Mezcal Gin

MG Mezcal Gin comes from Durango, Mexico, where it is made in small batches. It starts as a mezcal distilled from maguey agave, then borrows a page from the traditional pechuga method of mezcal making. In a classic pechuga, ingredients are suspended in the still so their aromas infuse the spirit as it distills. Here, instead of the usual additions, the makers hang a basket of gin botanicals, so the smoky agave spirit is layered with the juniper-forward character of a gin. The result is a genuine hybrid that drinks like neither a straight mezcal nor a straight gin, but something all its own.

Tasting Notes

Look for the gentle wood smoke and earthy cooked-agave backbone of mezcal woven together with the piney lift of juniper and a mix of warm spice and citrus botanicals. It is aromatic, savory and a little wild, the kind of pour that rewards slow sipping and sparks conversation.

What to Pair It With

Its smoky, botanical character loves bright and spicy food from the Sparrow dinner menu, such as the Lamb Quesa-Birria Tacos, the Guajillo Chicken or the Tuna Tartare. Sip it neat to explore the layers, or let our bar build it into a smoky twist on a Margarita. It is a fun one to discover in the 21+ lounge.
