From Sparrow’s bourbon list, Weller Reserve is often called the original wheated bourbon, a softer, gentler style of Kentucky whiskey ($14 by the pour, or $21 for a larger pour).
About Weller Reserve
W.L. Weller comes from the Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, and is named for William Larue Weller, the distiller credited with pioneering the use of wheat as the secondary grain in bourbon. Weller Reserve, sometimes called Weller Special Reserve, is the entry point to that wheated family and is touted as the original wheated bourbon. By using wheat in place of rye, Weller delivers a softer expression than most bourbons, which has earned it a devoted following well beyond Kentucky, including here in Kirkland.
Tasting Notes
Wheated bourbons trade the peppery spice of rye for a smoother, rounder, slightly sweeter character, and Weller Reserve is a clear example of that style. Expect a gentle, easygoing palate with soft sweetness and a mellow finish. It is approachable and friendly, an excellent introduction to what makes wheated bourbon special, and an easy choice whether you are new to bourbon or a longtime fan looking for something gentle.
