From Sparrow’s white wine list, the Weather Chardonnay is a polished, cool-climate California white that drinks beautifully at the table, and it is $70 by the bottle. It is a lovely choice when you want something a little more serious to go with dinner here in Juanita.
About Weather Chardonnay
Weather is a project focused on the great Burgundian varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, drawn from California’s cooler coastal microclimates. The whole idea behind the label is that climate, the fog, the wind, and the ocean influence, shapes the wine as much as anything, which is where the name comes from. This bottling comes from the Sonoma Coast, a region prized for the way its marine fog and ocean influence let Chardonnay ripen slowly and hold on to its freshness and acidity. The first vintage Weather ever produced won double gold at the New York Wine and Spirits competition, an early signal of the quality and style the project was after. This is a 2020 vintage, a year when a warmer Sonoma Coast summer led to early, even ripening and an August harvest. Everything about the wine is built to express that cool, coastal sense of place rather than to chase power.
Tasting Notes
Look for floral and tree fruit notes lifted by bright lemon, with oak that is well integrated rather than dominant. The Sonoma Coast origin shows in the freshness and balance, so the wine feels rounded and complete without ever tipping into heaviness. It is an elegant, classically styled Chardonnay, the kind of bottle that rewards a slower pour over the course of a meal.
What to Pair It With
A balanced Chardonnay like this is a natural with richer seafood and creamy dishes. From the Sparrow dinner menu, pour it with the Wild Alaskan Halibut, the Scallops and Prosciutto, the Pacific Black Cod, or the Seafood Chowder. It also pairs nicely with the Guajillo Chicken and is a fine partner for the Burrata Avocado to start.
