Tanqueray

From Sparrow’s gin list, Tanqueray is the benchmark London dry, the gin that set the standard back in 1830 ($11 by the pour, or $16.50 for a larger pour).

About Tanqueray

Tanqueray was first distilled in 1830 by Charles Tanqueray, who at just twenty broke with a family line of clergymen to open a distillery in London’s Bloomsbury. It set the standard for London dry gin with a famously minimalist recipe: just four botanicals, coriander, angelica, licorice root, and of course bold juniper, the flavor it is best known for. The original London distillery was largely destroyed in an air raid in 1941, but a surviving copper pot still nicknamed “Old Tom” carried on, and production has been based in Scotland since the Second World War. It is a clean, dependable, world-traveled gin with real history behind every pour.

Tasting Notes

Tanqueray is crisp, dry, and juniper-forward, exactly what a classic London dry should be. The four botanicals give it a bright, citrus-edged backbone with a clean, dry finish. It is the kind of gin that makes a textbook gin and tonic or a bone-dry martini, structured rather than soft.

What to Pair It With

Bright and endlessly mixable, Tanqueray is a natural in a martini or a gin and tonic. From the Sparrow dinner menu, pair it with Fresh Oysters, the Tuna Tartare, or a crisp salad. It is a great happy hour choice too, with well drinks $3 off daily from 3 to 5 PM in the 21+ lounge.
