Frescobaldi Brunello

From Sparrow’s red wine by the bottle list, the Frescobaldi Brunello is one of the great names of Tuscany, a special-occasion red we are proud to pour, and it is $510 by the bottle.

About Frescobaldi Brunello

Brunello di Montalcino is one of Italy’s most prestigious appellations, made entirely from Sangiovese (locally called Brunello) grown in the hills around the town of Montalcino in southern Tuscany. This bottle comes from Marchesi Frescobaldi, a family with around 700 years and 30 generations of Tuscan winemaking behind them. Their Montalcino home is the historic Tenuta CastelGiocondo estate, an ancient stronghold built around 1100, and CastelGiocondo was one of the very first estates to produce Brunello di Montalcino back in the 1800s. Frescobaldi acquired the property in 1989 and it has been a cornerstone of their portfolio ever since. As the menu lists it, this is a Tuscany bottling from the 2016 vintage. Brunello requires long aging before release by law, which is part of what gives the wine its depth and its famous ability to age for decades.

Tasting Notes

The menu lists this simply, so we will describe the style rather than invent notes. Brunello di Montalcino is typically full-bodied and powerful yet refined, with concentrated dark and red cherry fruit, leather, dried herbs, and earth, firm but polished tannins, and a long savory finish. It is a structured wine that rewards decanting and a generous main course. Few Italian reds carry the prestige and aging reputation of Brunello, and a name like Frescobaldi behind it makes this a bottle worth saving for a celebration.

What to Pair It With

Brunello calls for hearty fare. From the Sparrow dinner menu, pair it with our American Wagyu steaks, the Sparrow-Smoked Rack, or the Braised Duck. The Italian Sausage Fresh Rigatoni is a comforting match as well.
