About Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva

This wine comes from Castello di Volpaia, a hilltop village just north of Radda in Chianti whose first documents date back to 1172, making it one of the most historic names in the region. The estate sits well above 400 meters in the heart of Chianti Classico, and the Mascheroni Stianti family have been producing a Riserva here since 1967, back when very few growers bothered with one. As the menu notes, this DOCG Chianti Classico is 100% Sangiovese grown from old clones that thrive by sending deep roots into the tough rocky and sandy soil of these higher-altitude vineyards. That high elevation and sandstone soil, rich in skeleton, are exactly what give Volpaia its reputation for elegant, long-lived reds. The extra aging required of a Riserva is what builds the smooth tannins and polished feel in the glass.

Tasting Notes

As the menu describes it, this is a bold wine with deep complexity, where the extra aging ensures smooth tannins and an overall polished elegance. In general terms, high-altitude Radda Sangiovese tends toward bright red cherry and dried herb, firm but fine-grained structure, and a savory, mineral edge that keeps it food-friendly. It is the kind of red that rewards a little time in the glass.

What to Pair It With

Sangiovese loves the table. From the Sparrow dinner menu, pour it with the Italian Sausage Fresh Rigatoni, the Eggplant Parmigiana, or one of our American Wagyu steaks. The Pomodoro Goat Cheese Spaghetti is another natural match for its bright acidity.
