About Secret Squirrel GSM

Secret Squirrel is a Washington project made with serious pedigree, produced and bottled in Walla Walla with the same hands-on care that goes into the state’s top reds. GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, the classic trio of southern France’s Rhone Valley, and this 2019 Columbia Valley bottling is a domestic take on that tradition. The blend is 58% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre, and 17% Grenache, leaning on Syrah for its dark-fruited core while the Mourvedre and Grenache add lift, spice, and warmth. The winemaking is thoughtful and low-intervention: the grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, then given 22 to 24 months of barrel aging for added complexity. The result is a wine that drinks well above its price.

Tasting Notes

Rich dark fruit dominates the palate, layered with subtle herb and spice notes that are classic for the Rhone style. The tannins are quite polished, adding to a clean, smooth texture that makes the wine approachable from the first sip. The Syrah-led core gives it body and depth, while the Mourvedre and Grenache bring brightness and a touch of warmth that keep the finish lively. It is generous and easygoing without feeling simple, the sort of versatile red that suits a casual weeknight or a relaxed dinner with friends just as well.

What to Pair It With

A GSM blend is one of the most food-friendly reds out there. From the Sparrow dinner menu, pour it with the Italian Sausage Fresh Rigatoni, the Mussels and Sausages, or the Sparrow-Smoked Rack. The dark fruit and spice also work nicely with the Lamb Quesa-Birria Tacos or the Guajillo Chicken.
