From Sparrow’s amaro and vermouth list, Amaro Montenegro is one of Italy’s most beloved and approachable amari, $12 by the pour, or $18 for a larger pour, here in Kirkland’s Juanita neighborhood.
About Montenegro
Amaro Montenegro was created in Bologna in 1885 by Stanislao Cobianchi, a curious traveler who collected botanicals from around the world to build a beautifully balanced elixir. He first called it Elisir Lungavita, his elixir of life. Years later he renamed it in honor of Princess Elena of Montenegro, who married into the Italian royal family and would become Queen of Italy. As the menu notes, it is built from more than 40 botanicals, many of them kept secret, which together create a wildly complex and flavorful spirit. The recipe has stayed unchanged since 1885, known in full to only a handful of people. Despite leaning more sweet than bitter, it stays lighter and less syrupy than many other amari.
Tasting Notes
Montenegro is bright, layered, and inviting. Expect fragrant orange and citrus peel woven through warm spice and soft herbal notes, with a rounded sweetness and just enough gentle bitterness to keep it lively. The lighter body makes it remarkably easy to sip.
What to Pair It With
This is a versatile amaro that works before or after a meal. Sip it neat or over a large cube as a digestivo, and let it follow a plate from the Sparrow menu such as the American Wagyu steaks or the Braised Duck. It also pairs beautifully with an espresso. Unwind with one in our 21+ lounge after dinner.
