From Sparrow’s gin list, Leopold Gin is a Colorado small-batch gin built one distillate at a time ($13 by the pour, or $19.50 for a larger pour).
About Leopold Gin
Leopold Gin is made by Leopold Bros, a family-owned distillery in Denver, Colorado. Rather than throwing all the botanicals into one still, Leopold distills each one separately and then blends the individual distillates of juniper, Valencia oranges, pomelos, orris root, cardamom, and coriander. This painstaking method, sometimes called fractional distillation, lets each botanical show at its best before they are married together, giving the gin a clarity and balance that is hard to achieve any other way. Leopold Bros has been a family operation since the early 2000s and is known for doing things slowly and by hand, and this gin is a good example of that patient, craft-first approach.
Tasting Notes
Expect a clean, expressive gin with vibrant citrus from the Valencia orange and pomelo, classic juniper at the center, and gentle warmth from cardamom and coriander, all held together by earthy orris root. It is bright and well-defined, equally good in a martini or a simple gin and tonic.
What to Pair It With
Bright and citrus-driven, Leopold Gin is a natural with Fresh Oysters, Tuna Tartare, or a Spring Arugula Salad from the Sparrow dinner menu, and it makes a crisp, aromatic martini or spritz. Try one during the daily happy hour from 3 to 5 PM ($3 off well drinks) in the 21+ lounge.
