About Gaja Promis

Gaja is a legendary Piedmont producer, and Promis is one of the wines from the family’s Tuscan estate, Ca’Marcanda. When Barolo icon Angelo Gaja purchased the property in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast in 1996, he brought his Piedmontese experience to Tuscany’s coastal terroir. The estate’s name, Ca’Marcanda, means house of endless negotiations in the Piemontese dialect, a nod to the long discussions it took to acquire the land. Promis is a blend built around Merlot with Syrah and Sangiovese, grown in the dark soils of Bolgheri and the neighboring Bibbona area. It is released as a Toscana IGT rather than under the Bolgheri DOC, a choice that gives Gaja the freedom to include Syrah and Sangiovese alongside the Merlot. As the menu lists it, this is a Tuscany bottling from the 2023 vintage. It is typically aged in barriques before release.

Tasting Notes

The menu keeps it brief, so we will describe the style. A Merlot-led Tuscan coastal blend like this is generally smooth and approachable, with ripe dark fruit and plum from the Merlot, a peppery, savory lift from the Syrah, and a bright structural backbone from the Sangiovese. Expect a supple, medium to full body and a polished, welcoming finish.

What to Pair It With

This is a flexible, food-loving red. From the Sparrow dinner menu, enjoy it with our American Wagyu steaks, the Braised Duck, or the Italian Sausage Fresh Rigatoni. The Eggplant Parmigiana is a lovely match too.
