Old Raj Gin

From Sparrow’s gin list, Old Raj is a famous saffron-tinted gin with real character, $20 by the pour, or $30 for a larger pour.

About Old Raj Gin

Old Raj is bottled by Wm Cadenhead, the long-established independent bottler based in Scotland, and it has been made for Cadenhead’s since the early 1970s. What sets it apart is right there in the glass: this famous “strong gin” has a noted tint from the addition of saffron post distillation. Most of its botanicals are distilled with the base spirit in the classic way, but the delicate saffron is infused after distillation, which gives Old Raj its signature golden hue and a subtle floral, savory layer you will not find in an ordinary London Dry.

Tasting Notes

Old Raj leads with classic gin botanicals, juniper, citrus, and spice, then adds the gentle, almost honeyed warmth of saffron. It is aromatic and full bodied, with a pale golden color and a distinctive depth that makes it a gin to sip and consider as much as to mix. The saffron does not turn it into a flavored gin, instead it rounds out the edges and adds a quiet richness that lingers, so each sip feels a little more luxurious than a standard pour.

What to Pair It With

The saffron character makes Old Raj a standout in a martini, where its color and aromatics really show. From the Sparrow dinner menu it is excellent with Fresh Oysters, the Tuna Tartare, or the Scallops and Prosciutto. The 21+ lounge with its quartzite bar is the perfect spot to enjoy a proper martini on the Eastside.
