Veuve Clicquot

From Sparrow’s sparkling and Champagne list, the Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut is the one Champagne that truly needs no introduction, an icon of celebration and one of the most respected and consumed Champagnes in the world ($220 by the bottle).

About Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot is a non-vintage Brut Champagne from the Champagne region of France, with a story that stretches back more than two and a half centuries. The House was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot. Its name and legend, however, belong to Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, the young widow (veuve in French) who took over the family business in her twenties and went on to transform Champagne itself. Madame Clicquot is credited with producing the first known vintage Champagne and with inventing the riddling table, a technique for clarifying Champagne that improved both quality and finesse and is still echoed in Champagne cellars today. The signature Yellow Label Brut has been produced since 1877 and is built around a dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend, which lends it strength, structure, and elegance. It is, quite simply, one of the great names in wine, and a beautiful way to mark an occasion here on the Eastside.

Tasting Notes

As the menu puts it, this is a bold Champagne with tiny bubbles and charming acidity that conspire to invigorate flavors of lemon, crisp apple, pear, and toasty brioche. It is dry, lively, and immediately recognizable, with the kind of balance and depth that have made it a benchmark for generations.

What to Pair It With

Champagne is wonderfully versatile at the table. From the Sparrow menu, pour it with Fresh Oysters, the Tuna Tartare, the Scallops and Prosciutto, or the Wild Alaskan Halibut. It is also a natural fit for weekend brunch on the patio, alongside the Truffle Deviled Eggs or the Burrata Avocado.
