From Sparrow’s Scotch list, the Macallan 18 is one of the most celebrated single malts in the world and a true special-occasion pour ($55 by the pour, or $82.50 for a larger pour).
About Macallan 18
The Macallan is a Speyside single malt distillery in Craigellachie, in the north-east of Scotland, founded in 1824 as one of the first legally licensed distilleries in the country. Macallan built its reputation on sherry-cask maturation, and its Sherry Oak range is matured in casks seasoned with sherry and brought to the distillery from Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. The 18 Year Old has been part of the lineup for decades and is prized for the depth that long maturation in sherry oak gives it. This is one of the great names in Scotch, the kind of bottle people remember.
Tasting Notes
Long maturation in sherry-seasoned oak gives Macallan its signature richness, deep dried-fruit and spice character with a warm, rounded body and a long finish. It is a Scotch built for slow sipping, complex and rewarding rather than fiery.
